Goodland Regional Medical Center recently received a very generous donation from a surprising source. GRMC was given $5,000 from Climb4ACure, a non-profit corporation that raises funds for the purpose of purchasing and delivering education, treatment and supplies to underprivileged diabetics. “Climb4ACure is proud to continue executing on its goal of partnering with health care providers to directly benefit underprivileged diabetics. In this case we are supporting Goodland Regional Medical Center with its outreach and education programs for the underserved in the community,” said Bryan Neider, President and founder of Climb4ACure. A portion of the donated funds has been used to purchase a Continuous Glucose Monitoring system for use by GRMC Dietician and Diabetes Educator Sarah Linton. The device allows diabetes patients to see what happens to glucose levels on a minute-to-minute basis and evaluate trends during normal daily activities. The information gathered by the monitor helps physicians evaluate and fine-tune treatment and provide education for the patient. “Most people are probably checking blood sugar levels several times a day,” Linton said. “While this information is important in making adjustments in treatment plans, it really isn’t enough information for fine-tuning.” Continuous monitoring is reimbursed by Medicare and covered by many private insurance plans; however, with the funding from Climb4ACure, the monitor is available free of charge to patients with financial need. Remaining funds will be used to assist under insured diabetes patients with testing supplies and medications. Climb4ACure was founded in 2007 by Neider, who was diagnosed with diabetes. He decided to undertake the rigors of mountain climbing when he learned that one of the best ways he had to fight his illness was to stay in good physical shape. As a result, he has been to the top of Mt. Hood, Mt. Whitney, Kilimanjaro, and many others. His goal is to climb the highest peak in each of the 50 states. He has already climbed several, including Mount Sunflower in April 2008. For more information about the Continuous Glucose Monitor contact Sarah Linton at (785) 890-6044 or visit her booth at the Sherman County Health Fair on January, 30. |
