Pediatrician Joins Goodland Family Health Center

Goodland Regional Medical Center is very pleased to announce that Lisa M. Unruh, M.D. has joined the Goodland Family Health Center as its newest physician. Dr. Unruh recently finished her pediatrics residency in Macon, Georgia and is currently taking appointments at the Family Health Clinic.

Dr. Unruh obtained a B.S. in Biology from Kansas State University in 1999. She then studied advanced microbiology and hematology at Wichita State University while completing her pre-med internship at The Hertzler Clinic. In 2001, she entered medical school at the University of Kansas. While there, she developed an interest in pediatric rheumatology, serving as a summer fellow in rheumatology in 2002, and working as sub-intern in the Lupus Center at St. Thomas Hospital in London in 2006. After graduation in 2006, Dr. Unruh entered a three year Pediatrics Residency at The Children’s Hospital in Macon.

On a daily basis, patients from over 30 counties in southern Georgia are referred to The Children’s Hospital in Macon. As a result, Dr. Unruh developed excellent pediatric diagnostic and therapeutic skills. During residency, she has managed daily care of pediatric patients featuring a wide range of disease processes, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, blood disorders, and neurological disorders, to name a few. Her residency has also given her experience in pediatric emergency care as well as intensive care services for infants and children. Dr. Unruh also received additional training in resuscitation and management of premature infants and infants born with congenital disorders.

“Through my training, I have come to realize that children are not ‘little adults’ but are instead a special group who require an immense amount of patience and compassion for their needs,” Dr Unruh said.

Dr. Unruh grew up on a cattle and wheat farm in Halstead, KS. Therefore, after residency she desired to start her practice in a rural area. Dr. Unruh has family ties to the Northwest Kansas area. She has uncles, aunts and cousins living in Wallace County, KS and over the border in Colorado. So when she discovered that Goodland was in need of a pediatrician, it seemed like a golden opportunity for her to start a rural practice and be closer to family. Her many interests include wildlife biology, southwest archaeology, and hiking and camping in the Rocky Mountains. She is also a student of European art and history, especially Germanic languages and literature.
